Description
Fothergilla x intermedia ‘Mount Airy’ is a deciduous shrub prized for its exceptional fall foliage and fragrant spring flowers. A hybrid between Fothergilla gardenii and Fothergilla major, this cultivar combines the compact, dense habit of its parents with increased vigor and adaptability. In spring, it produces bottlebrush-like, white flower spikes that emit a sweet, honeyed fragrance, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its standout feature is the vibrant autumn display, where leaves transition from green to a stunning blend of yellow, orange, and red hues, making it a valuable addition for seasonal interest in landscapes. ‘Mount Airy’ thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained acidic soils, demonstrating excellent tolerance to heat and humidity, which makes it a versatile choice for gardens across a range of climates. This cultivar has been recognized for its ornamental appeal and resilience, often recommended by extension services and botanical institutions for use in naturalistic plantings and foundation borders.
