Description
Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’, commonly known as the European Hornbeam, is a striking deciduous tree admired for its distinctive columnar form and dense, vibrant green foliage that turns a warm golden-yellow in autumn. Originating from Europe, this cultivar is prized for its elegant, narrow growth habit, making it an excellent choice for urban landscapes, formal hedges, and narrow garden spaces where vertical accentuation is desired. The smooth, gray bark and intricately veined leaves add ornamental interest year-round, while its tolerance to pruning allows for versatile shaping and maintenance. Historically, the European Hornbeam has been valued not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its durability and adaptability to various soil types and environmental conditions. Its ability to withstand pollution and drought makes ‘Frans Fontaine’ particularly suited for city planting and sustainable landscapes. This cultivar has been recognized by horticultural societies for its architectural form and reliability as a landscape specimen.
