Description
Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem,’ commonly known as Little Gem Southern Magnolia, is a compact and evergreen cultivar prized for its glossy, dark green leaves and large, fragrant white flowers that bloom from late spring through summer. Originating from the classic Southern Magnolia species native to the southeastern United States, ‘Little Gem’ was selected for its smaller, more manageable size, typically growing 20 to 30 feet tall and wide, making it ideal for smaller gardens and urban landscapes. This variety retains the iconic thick, leathery foliage with rusty brown undersides and produces the same creamy, tulip-shaped blossoms that are beloved for their sweet fragrance. ‘Little Gem’ is valued for its adaptability to a range of soil types and its tolerance of heat and humidity, reflecting the resilience of its native lineage. It has earned recognition for its ornamental appeal and versatility, often recommended for use as a specimen tree, hedge, or screen in southern landscapes.
