Description
Thymus serpyllum ‘Elfin,’ commonly known as Creeping Thyme, is a low-growing, evergreen perennial renowned for its dense, carpet-like mat of tiny, aromatic leaves and vibrant pink to lavender flowers that bloom profusely in early summer. Native to Europe and widely used in North American gardens, this cultivar is prized for its exceptional drought tolerance, ability to withstand foot traffic, and adaptability to various soil types, making it an ideal groundcover for rock gardens, pathways, and between stepping stones. ‘Elfin’ is distinguished by its compact growth habit, typically reaching just 2 to 3 inches in height, creating a lush, fragrant green carpet that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its historical use dates back centuries, valued not only for culinary and medicinal purposes but also as a decorative and functional landscape plant. The plant’s resilience and ornamental appeal have earned it a lasting place in sustainable gardening practices, celebrated for its low maintenance and environmental benefits.
