Description
Hosta ‘Liberty’ is a striking variety of plantain lily prized for its bold, variegated foliage that features wide, creamy-white margins surrounding deep green centers, creating a dramatic contrast in shaded garden settings. Originating as a sport of the popular Hosta ‘Francee’, ‘Liberty’ was introduced in the mid-20th century and has since become a beloved staple among shade garden enthusiasts for its vigorous growth, resilience, and low-maintenance nature. This cultivar typically grows to a medium size, producing lush, ovate leaves that maintain their variegation throughout the growing season, often complemented by delicate, pale lavender flowers in summer. Known for its adaptability to a range of soil types and excellent deer resistance, Hosta ‘Liberty’ thrives in partial to full shade, making it an ideal choice for underplanting beneath trees or in shaded borders. It has been recognized by various horticultural societies for its ornamental value and reliability, underscoring its enduring popularity in perennial garden design.
