Description
Actaea racemosa ‘Brunette’, commonly known as Bugbane or Black Cohosh, is a striking perennial valued for its tall, elegant spikes of fragrant, creamy-white flowers that contrast beautifully against its deep, rich burgundy to almost black foliage. Native to the woodlands of eastern North America, this cultivar was selectively bred for its dramatic dark leaves, which provide a unique architectural element in shade gardens. Blooming in late summer to early fall, ‘Brunette’ is especially prized for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies, while its unpleasant scent helps deter biting insects, hence the common name Bugbane. This plant thrives in moist, well-drained, part-shade environments and is known for its resilience and low maintenance needs. Its combination of ornamental foliage, fragrant blooms, and ecological benefits has made Actaea racemosa ‘Brunette’ a favored choice among gardeners seeking bold texture and late-season interest in perennial borders.
