Description
Hydrangea arborescens, commonly known as Smooth Hydrangea, is a native North American deciduous shrub celebrated for its large, rounded clusters of creamy white flowers that bloom from early to mid-summer. This species is prized for its adaptability to a range of soil types and light conditions, thriving in partial shade to full sun, and its robust nature makes it a reliable choice for landscapes and naturalized plantings. Smooth Hydrangea features dark green, ovate leaves that provide a lush backdrop to its striking flower heads, which often mature to a soft green or pinkish hue as the season progresses. Historically, this hydrangea has been valued by indigenous peoples and gardeners alike for its ornamental appeal and ease of cultivation. The popular cultivar ‘Annabelle’ has particularly garnered recognition for its exceptionally large and long-lasting flower heads, elevating the species’ prominence in ornamental horticulture. Its versatility and classic floral display have made Hydrangea arborescens a staple in American gardens and public landscapes.
