Description
Gardenia jasminoides ‘Buttons’, commonly known as Cape Jasmine, is a compact and highly fragrant evergreen shrub prized for its glossy, dark green foliage and abundant, button-shaped white blooms. This cultivar is celebrated for its more prolific flowering and slightly smaller, rounded blooms compared to traditional gardenias, making it an excellent choice for container gardening and smaller landscapes. Native to East Asia, Gardenia jasminoides has a rich horticultural history dating back to the 18th century, valued for its exquisite fragrance and elegant floral form. ‘Buttons’ thrives in warm, humid climates with well-drained acidic soil and partial shade, and it is often used as a focal point or border plant in gardens. Its standout feature is the intense, sweet scent that fills the air during bloom, offering both visual appeal and sensory delight. Gardenia jasminoides cultivars, including ‘Buttons,’ are appreciated for their versatility and have been recognized in various horticultural circles for their garden performance and ornamental value.
