Description
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Onyx Zebra’ is a distinctive cultivar of the popular Big Leaf Hydrangea, renowned for its striking variegated foliage characterized by bold white and green stripes that resemble zebra patterning. This unique leaf coloration not only adds year-round ornamental interest but also contrasts beautifully with the classic mophead or lacecap blooms typical of Hydrangea macrophylla, which can range in color from pink to blue depending on soil pH. Originating from traditional Big Leaf Hydrangeas native to Japan, ‘Onyx Zebra’ has been selectively bred to enhance its dramatic foliage, making it a standout choice for shade gardens, borders, and mixed shrub plantings. The plant thrives in well-drained, moist soils with partial shade, showcasing its versatility and adaptability in temperate landscapes. Its combination of eye-catching foliage and lush, rounded flower clusters makes ‘Onyx Zebra’ a favored selection among gardeners seeking both texture and seasonal color interest.
