Description
Aegopodium podagraria ‘Variegatum,’ commonly known as Bishop’s Weed or Variegated Goutweed, is a vigorous and fast-spreading perennial groundcover native to Europe and Asia. It is prized for its attractive, variegated foliage featuring green leaves edged with creamy white margins, which adds bright contrast and texture to shaded garden areas. This plant thrives in a variety of soil conditions and is particularly well-suited for suppressing weeds under trees and in difficult shaded spots where grass struggles to grow. Historically, Aegopodium podagraria was used medicinally in Europe, but today it is primarily valued for its ornamental foliage and durable, low-maintenance growth habit. Its ability to quickly form a dense mat makes it an effective erosion control groundcover; however, gardeners should be mindful of its aggressive spreading tendencies. Bishop’s Weed is often recommended in naturalistic and woodland garden designs for its unique variegation and reliable ground coverage.
