Description
Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’, commonly known as Sweetgum, is a striking deciduous tree valued for its vibrant autumn foliage and distinctive star-shaped leaves. Originating from eastern North America, this cultivar is admired for its compact, pyramidal habit and dense branching, making it an excellent specimen for urban and residential landscapes. The ‘Worplesdon’ variety distinguishes itself with an enhanced tolerance to heat and drought compared to some traditional Sweetgum types, providing versatility across diverse climates. Its glossy, lobed leaves transition through a spectacular color range in fall, including shades of red, orange, and purple, contributing significant seasonal interest. Additionally, the tree produces spiky, spherical fruit capsules that persist into winter, adding texture to the landscape. Historically, Sweetgum trees have been valued for their aromatic resin and hardwood, and ‘Worplesdon’ has gained recognition among horticulturists for its refined form and adaptability, often recommended by extension services such as NC State for sustainable urban planting.
