Description
Vernonia lettermanii ‘Iron Butterfly’ is a striking perennial known for its bold, upright growth habit and vibrant purple flower clusters that bloom in late summer to early fall. Native to the southeastern United States, this hardy Ironweed species is valued for its tolerance to a range of soil types, including moist and well-drained conditions, making it an excellent choice for naturalistic gardens and pollinator-friendly landscapes. The deep green, lance-shaped foliage provides a dramatic contrast to the intense flower heads, which attract butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects, supporting local ecosystems. ‘Iron Butterfly’ stands out with its robust stature, often reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet, and its unique ability to maintain structural integrity late into the growing season, adding vertical interest and vibrant color when many other perennials have faded. This cultivar has been recognized for its garden performance and ecological benefits, making it a popular selection for sustainable gardening and wildlife habitats.
