Description
Dianthus chinensis x barbatus ‘Violet’ Sweet William is a striking hybrid perennial known for its vibrant violet blooms and delightful clove-like fragrance. This cultivar is a cross between Dianthus chinensis (Chinese pink) and Dianthus barbatus (Sweet William), combining the hardiness and compact growth habit of the former with the rich floral clusters and robust nature of the latter. Sweet William has a long history dating back to the 18th century when it became popular in European cottage gardens for its colorful flower heads and attractiveness to pollinators such as butterflies and bees. The ‘Violet’ variety showcases densely packed, bi-colored petals with shades of deep violet and lighter accents, making it a favorite for borders, rock gardens, and cut flower arrangements. Renowned for its extended blooming period from late spring to early summer, it thrives in full sun and well-drained soil conditions. Its versatility, combined with deer resistance and moderate drought tolerance, adds to its appeal among gardeners and landscapers alike. The Sweet William group, including the ‘Violet’ cultivar, has been recognized by various horticultural societies for its ornamental value and garden performance.
