Description
Callicarpa dichotoma ‘Issai Purple Pride’, commonly known as Issai Purple Pride Beautyberry, is a striking deciduous shrub prized for its vibrant clusters of glossy, deep purple berries that persist into late fall and winter, providing essential visual interest and wildlife value. Originating from East Asia, this cultivar is a compact and reliable selection notable for its upright, dense growth habit, reaching about 3 to 5 feet in height, making it ideal for smaller gardens and landscape borders. Its arching branches are adorned with small, lavender-pink flowers in summer that give way to the signature jewel-toned berries, which attract birds and add seasonal color contrast against the green foliage. Issai Purple Pride is celebrated for its exceptional berry production even on young plants, a trait inherited from the Issai variety, which is a hybrid between Japanese and Chinese species. Its resilience and ornamental appeal have made it a popular choice among gardeners seeking low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly shrubs that combine aesthetic beauty with ecological benefits.
