Description
Acer circinatum, commonly known as Vine Maple, is a deciduous small tree or large shrub native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, particularly flourishing in the moist, shaded understories of coastal forests. Renowned for its graceful, multi-stemmed form and delicate, palmate leaves that turn brilliant shades of orange, red, and yellow in autumn, Vine Maple offers exceptional seasonal interest and a naturalistic appeal in woodland gardens. Unlike many maples, it thrives in shaded or partially shaded environments and adapts well to moist, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for erosion control and habitat restoration projects. Historically, Indigenous peoples utilized its flexible stems for basketry, underscoring its cultural significance. Vine Maple’s ornamental value and adaptability have earned it recognition in native plant gardening and sustainable landscaping, celebrated for enhancing biodiversity and supporting local wildlife.
