Description
Platanus x acerifolia ‘Columbia’, commonly known as the London Planetree ‘Columbia’, is a remarkable hybrid tree prized for its resilience and striking appearance. This cultivar is a cross between the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and the Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis), developed to combine the hardiness of its American parent with the ornamental qualities of the Oriental species. ‘Columbia’ is distinguished by its rapid growth, large stature, and extensive canopy, making it an excellent shade tree for urban and suburban landscapes. Its exfoliating bark, which peels away in patches to reveal a mosaic of cream, green, and brown, adds year-round visual interest and texture. The broad, maple-like leaves turn a vibrant yellow in fall, enhancing its seasonal appeal. The ‘Columbia’ cultivar is especially valued for its improved resistance to anthracnose, a common disease affecting sycamores, as well as its tolerance to pollution and compacted soils, traits that make it a popular choice for city planting projects. The tree has been widely recognized for its adaptability and durability in challenging environments, contributing to its status as a staple in landscape design across temperate regions.
