Description
Cornus mas, commonly known as Cornelian Cherry Dogwood, is a deciduous shrub or small tree prized for its early spring yellow flowers that bloom before the leaves emerge, adding vibrant color to late winter landscapes. Native to southern Europe and southwestern Asia, this species has a rich horticultural history dating back centuries, valued both ornamentally and for its edible, cherry-like red fruits that ripen in late summer. The Cornelian Cherry Dogwood is notable for its glossy green foliage, attractive bark, and exceptional hardiness, making it suitable for a variety of garden settings including hedges and naturalized areas. Its fruits are rich in vitamin C and often used in jams, jellies, and traditional medicinal remedies. The plant also supports wildlife by providing early nectar for pollinators and food for birds. Recognized for its versatility and ornamental appeal, Cornus mas has been a favored choice among gardeners seeking multi-season interest and functional value in landscape design.
