Description
Cotoneaster horizontalis, commonly known as Rockspray Cotoneaster, is a versatile, low-growing deciduous shrub prized for its distinctive, horizontally spreading branches that create a dense, lattice-like pattern. Native to western China, this species has been widely cultivated for its ornamental appeal, featuring small, glossy green leaves that turn vibrant shades of red and orange in the fall. In late spring to early summer, it produces abundant clusters of small white flowers, which attract pollinators, followed by bright red berries that provide valuable winter interest and food for birds. Its tolerance for a range of soil types and conditions, including drought and urban pollution, makes it an excellent choice for groundcover, erosion control on slopes, and rock gardens. The Rockspray Cotoneaster’s unique architectural form and seasonal color changes have earned it recognition from horticultural societies and it remains a popular selection among landscapers and gardeners for its combination of beauty and rugged adaptability.
