Description
Alnus rubra, commonly known as Red Alder, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, particularly abundant along moist coastal and riverine environments. Renowned for its distinctive reddish-brown bark that peels in thin sheets, Red Alder plays a vital ecological role by enriching soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, thanks to its symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in its root nodules. This species typically reaches heights of 50 to 80 feet and features serrated, ovate leaves that turn yellow in fall, adding seasonal interest to landscapes. Historically, Indigenous peoples utilized Red Alder wood for various tools and dyes, and its lightweight, soft wood is valued in woodworking and furniture making today. Red Alder is also recognized for its ability to stabilize stream banks and improve habitat for wildlife, making it a favored choice in restoration projects and sustainable landscaping. Its adaptability to a range of soil types and moisture conditions, combined with its rapid growth and environmental benefits, underscore its importance both ecologically and economically.
