Description
Cuphea hyssopifolia ‘Allyson’, commonly known as Mexican Heather, is a compact, evergreen subshrub native to Mexico and Central America, prized for its delicate, fine-textured foliage and profuse small tubular flowers that range from lavender to pale purple hues. This cultivar is noted for its vigorous, bushy habit that typically reaches about 1 to 2 feet in height and width, making it an excellent choice for borders, containers, and ground cover in warm climates. Mexican Heather thrives in full sun to partial shade and is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to attract pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds. Its extended blooming season, often lasting from late spring through frost, adds long-lasting color to gardens and landscapes. Historically, Cuphea species have been appreciated in ornamental horticulture for their ease of care and adaptability across USDA zones 9 to 11. ‘Allyson’ stands out for its more compact form and prolific flowering compared to standard varieties, enhancing its appeal in both residential and commercial landscape designs. This cultivar’s charm and resilience have made it a popular selection among gardeners seeking low-maintenance yet visually appealing plants.
