Description
Rhamnus frangula ‘Columnaris’, commonly known as Columnar Buckthorn, is a striking, upright shrub valued for its narrow, columnar growth habit, making it an excellent choice for formal hedges, screens, or architectural accents in landscape design. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, this cultivar is distinguished by its dense, dark green foliage that turns attractive yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest. The plant produces inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers in late spring, followed by small black berries that attract birds, contributing to wildlife support. Its adaptability to a range of soil types and conditions, including partial shade and full sun, combined with moderate drought tolerance, makes it a versatile and low-maintenance option for gardeners. Historically, buckthorns have been used for their sturdy wood and medicinal properties, but the ‘Columnaris’ cultivar is primarily prized for its ornamental form and reliability in landscape applications. This cultivar’s unique columnar shape and dependable performance have earned it recognition among landscape professionals for use in urban and suburban settings.
