Description
Viburnum nudum ‘Winterthur’, commonly known as Possumhaw Viburnum, is a deciduous shrub celebrated for its multi-season interest and adaptability in landscape settings. Originating from native viburnums found in the eastern United States, ‘Winterthur’ is a selected cultivar prized for its glossy dark green leaves that turn vibrant reddish-purple in fall, providing striking seasonal color. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of fragrant white flowers that attract pollinators, followed by an abundance of bright blue to blue-black berries in late summer, which persist into winter and provide valuable food for birds. The shrub’s upright, dense growth habit makes it ideal for hedges, screens, or naturalized areas. ‘Winterthur’ demonstrates excellent tolerance to wet soils and partial shade, thriving particularly well in moist, well-drained sites, which reflects its native wetland origins. This cultivar was developed and named in honor of Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in Delaware, a renowned center for horticultural excellence, highlighting its garden-worthy qualities. Its combination of ornamental flowers, vibrant fall foliage, and persistent fruit establishes Viburnum nudum ‘Winterthur’ as a versatile and ecologically valuable addition to perennial and shrub borders.
